Airbrushing Sugar Cookies - The Basics Covered

Ever heard of airbrushing as an art form? Have you ever thought about applying the method to cookies 🍪?

Using edible paint and some different tools, you can pick up your airbrush and decorate cookies. Like most art forms, it will take a bit of practice to get it right, but the rewards will be stunning cookies that will totally up your cookie decorating game!

Here, we will walk you through what you need to begin airbrushing cookies.

Here's What You'll Need:

1. An Airbrush Machine (Obviously)

You will want an airbrush machine with a gun nozzle size of .4mm, adjustable pressure, maximum pressure of between 25-45 psi, and a cleaning kit. May we suggest the AirGenie Airbrush System ☺️

When using the airbrush machine, ensure it is about an 6-8 inches from the surface you are coloring to get the best effect. Practice makes perfect! We always suggest practicing on a reusable practice cookie to hone in on your craft!

2. Airbrush Colors

When dealing with cookies, you must use edible airbrush colors. In most cases, these will be water-based, so you can water them down even more to get a different density of color. We suggest the DecoPac Food Colors for Airbrushing.

A typical pack of watercolor edible airbrush paints will include yellow, orange, red, pink, purple, blue, brown, green, black, and white. You can get metallic colors, but these are not usually part of a standard set.

3. Plastic Bottles With Dripper Tips

These plastic squeeze bottles with dropper tip are perfect for mixing airbrush colorants and loading your airbrush. These bottles have a wide mouth that is easier to pour colorant into, and a premium tip which allows precise loading of colorant into airbrush. Comes with screw on red cap to preserve any unused dye.

4. Stencil Holders and Accessories

If you will be using the airbrush to stencil designs onto your cookie, you may want to think about using one or all of the following tools:

  • A Stencil Holder like the Stencil Genie. Think of it as a second set of hands while stenciling.
