The Best Way To Make Pastel Airbrush Colors

These pretty shades are appealing to add to Valentine's Day, Easter or baby shower cookies, cakes, and other sweet treats.

Unlike bold colors, pastels are a bit harder to mix and apply without the color becoming saturated. Here, we will walk you through how to mix pastel airbrush colors, bringing your creations to life.

What You Will Need:

  • DecoPac Airbrush Food Color in White
  • The same DecoPac Airbrush Food Colors - try greens, blues and pinks
  • Glass measuring cup
  • AirGenie Airbrush System
  • If you are airbrushing cookies in conjunction with a stencil, you may want a  Stencil Genie and the Screen Genie (optional, but a great tool to use when airbrushing)
  • Water and Grain alcohol or 100-proof vodka for cleaning your airbrush between colors.

How To Mix Pastel Airbrush Colors

Color theory is a huge part of mixing airbrush colors, and the key to creating pretty pastel colors is white!

Step 1- Make sure you have a clean measuring cup. This will allow you to pour the final product into the airbrush gun without spilling it.

Step 2- Place some white gel food coloring into the bowl. Try to make sure it is enough to coat your cookies (or cakes 😉)!

Step 3- Add a drop of the other gel food coloring. Then mix. If the shade of the coloring is a little too light, mix in another drop.

Step 4- Using the glass measuring cup, slowly pour the mixture into the airbrush gun.

Step 5- Place the cookies, cake, or other baked goods onto a flat surface (if you are stenciling, place the stencil along with the Stencil Genie and Screen Genie on top of your cookie). Holding the airbrush gun about 6 inches away from the surface, gently spray the color on, making sure not to hold the gun in one spot, but continuously move the gun to prevent pooling of color. Rotate the cookie or the cake to make sure you get the edges.

Step 6- To avoid overloading the cookie with color, allow each layer to dry before applying the next layer. This will help keep the color smooth and give a professional look.
