Supplies You'll Need

Cookie Decorating Tools

Royal Icing

  • Flood Consistency royal icing:
    • Red
    • White
    • Blue
  • Piping consistency royal icing:
    • White (for the red and blue cookies)
    • Blue (for the white cookie)

Food Coloring

Additional Supplies

  • Airbrush and colorants in colors tinted slightly different than your flood colors
  • Piping bags
  • Cookie projector (optional)
  • Scribe tool or toothpick

Step 1: Bake and Prepare Your Cookies

Roll out your favorite sugar cookie dough and cut using the USA Map Cookie Cutter. Bake according to your recipe and allow the cookies to cool completely before decorating.

Step 2: Flood the Base Colors

Prepare three cookies:

Cookie #1 – Red USA Map: Flood the entire cookie with red flood consistency royal icing.

Cookie #2 – Blue USA Map: Flood the entire cookie with blue flood consistency royal icing.

Cookie #3 – White USA Map: Flood the entire cookie with white flood consistency royal icing.

Then use a scribe tool to smooth the icing and pop any air bubbles. Allow the cookies to dry completely, preferably overnight, before moving on to the next step.

Step 3: Airbrush the Star Pattern

Once the flooded cookies are completely dry, position the Patriotic Stars Allover Cookie Stencil over each cookie.

Using your airbrush, apply a slightly darker shade of the same color as the cookie for a subtle tone-on-tone effect:

  • Darker red over the red cookie
  • Darker blue over the blue cookie
  • Light gray or soft blue over the white cookie

Apply light, even passes with the airbrush until the stars are visible but not overpowering.

Carefully remove the stencil to reveal the patriotic star pattern.

Decorating Tip: Several light coats will produce cleaner, more even results than one heavy application. This helps prevent underspray and keeps the design crisp.

Step 4: Pipe "USA" on Top

Once the airbrushed design is complete, add the finishing detail.

  • On the Red and Blue Cookies, using white piping consistency icing, pipe USA
  • On the White Cookies, using blue piping consistency icing, pipe USA
  • You can pipe the lettering freehand or use a cookie projector for perfectly centered, uniform lettering.
  • For a polished look, use a medium-sized round piping tip or simply cut a small opening in your piping bag.

Step 5: Allow to Dry

Let the piped lettering dry completely before packaging, stacking, or displaying the cookies.

Finished Look

You'll have a festive trio of patriotic cookies featuring:

  • A red USA map cookie with airbrushed stars and white lettering
  • A blue USA map cookie with airbrushed stars and white lettering
  • A white USA map cookie with airbrushed stars and blue lettering

The airbrushed star pattern adds depth and visual interest while keeping the overall design clean, modern, and easy to recreate.

Pro Tips for Success

  • Let flooded cookies dry overnight before airbrushing.
  • Secure the stencil firmly to prevent movement while airbrushing.
  • Build color gradually with several light coats.
  • Use contrasting piping colors so the "USA" lettering stands out.
  • A projector can help achieve consistent lettering across multiple cookies.
  • These cookies are perfect for Fourth of July parties, Memorial Day celebrations, military homecomings, and patriotic gift sets.
