Paint Your Own Love and Love Bug Cookies

Stenciling Paint Your Own cookies is the perfect way for you to set up a group of children with a fun activity that everyone will enjoy on Valentines Day. It doesn't take a lot of time to plan a unique Valentines treat for the kids. PYO Cookies are great for DIY school Valentines exchange or party. Check out these instructions and the video at the end for a detailed step by step on how to make your own!

Let's Get Started!

Make your cookies using our Ultimate Sugar Cookie Recipe then flood with white Royal Icing  You will also need black royal icing (tint the stencil consistency icing with black gel colorant) to apply the stencil with, which gives you the outline of the design that will then be filled in with the food coloring (you're kiddos will basically color in that design)

Spread royal icing through the stencil

Helpful Tips:

  1. To use PYO stencils you will need to use Royal Icing that is about the same consistency as peanut butter.
  2. Take up a bit of the royal icing using your tapered offset baker's spatula and hold the PYO stencil to the surface.
  3. Spread the royal icing through the stencil and away from your hand.
  4. Be sure to spread icing through the entire design before you scrape the excess off to put back with the rest.
  5. Gently lift the stencil straight off the cookie surface taking care not to smudge the design.
  6. Set the cookie aside for the icing to dry while you stencil the next one.
  7. Make sure that you are spreading icing away from the hand that is holding the stencil to the cookie surface. Scrape away the excess icing and repeat!

You'll be left with something like this:

Lift the stencil straight off the cookie surface

Then make your palette cookie (omit this step if you are using the edible palette or markers)

When it comes time for the color palette, the best way to do this is to use an airbrush with Amerimist Food Coloring. This works great because when it comes time to paint your cookies the food coloring acts just like watercolors! Simply put the color palette into the stencil genie, load your airbrush with the first color, and gently airbrush through the first shape for each cookie. Once you have completed the first color you will want to:

  1. Clean out the airbrush with vodka then let dry
  2. Line up the palette stencil with the first shape
  3. Then continue airbrushing the next color
  4. Repeat this process until you have 4 different colors on all of your cookie palettes!

SO CUTE!

Use your airgenie airbrush to stencil the cookie color palette

Tips on How to Package Your PYO Cookies:

  • When ready to package your PYO cookies, first insert the paint palette (or marker) in a lip and tape bag and seal. This keeps the palette from transferring onto the cookie.
  • Take a flat clear bag & insert your PYO cookie
  • Add the sealed bag with the palette and swab into the bag with the cookie (behind the cookie so you can see the cookie - I mean, you took the time to make it so make sure they can see it!)
  • Tie off finished cookie bag with a ribbon and you're good to go!
