Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Bake & Ice Your Base Cookies

Prepare sugar cookies and let them cool completely.
Flood with a smooth white royal icing and let it dry fully before decorating (overnight is ideal).  You can also flood with a pink color to skip step 2.

2. Add a Soft Background Color

(Skip this step if you prefer a white background.)

  • Shake your Petal Pink color well.
  • Test spray on paper towels before cookies to ensure smooth flow.
  • Apply light, even coats for a soft, gradient background on the square/rectangle cookies.
  • Allow to dry.

💡 Tip: Spraying from farther away diffuses the color for a softer look.

3. Airbrush Accents (Optional)

  • Add some pop by airbrushing heart shapes in Super Red. This creates dimension and festive color contrast to your Valentine's Day Goodie Bags.
  • If you have a second airbrush tool, switch it out now and load some Super Red into the reservoir. If not, then see below for instructions on cleaning the tool in between colors.
  • Airbrush half the number of heart cookies using multiple light coats.

4. Prepare Your Stencil for Word Search

  • Cover the stencil with Glad Press’n Seal to protect parts you don’t want to color.
  • Use a craft blade to carefully trim around the stencil letters and heart borders.
  • Remove areas of film covering sections you want to airbrush first.

5. Position & Lock Down the Stencil

  • Insert your Stencil into the Stencil Genie and the Screen Genie, then weigh down stencil with cookie magnets. This secures the stencil flat against the cookie surface ensuring crisp, sharp lines every time.

👉 Pro tip:  If your rectangle cookie is too large to fit inside the Stencil Genie, have no fear! Place the thicker portion down on the work surface, then the Screen Genie - only this time turn it upside down. Next, place the stencil upside down, then finally place the Wonderbar Accessory on either side of the assembly, using its magnets to hold it in place. Turn this assembly over and place of the the cookie.

👉 Pro tip: Before changing colors in your airbrush tool, you'll need to clean it. To do so, rinse out the reservoir 3-4 times using water. Next, reattach the hose, refill the reservoir with water, and then run the tool on full power until its empty. Repeat once more using water, and then a third time using an inexpensive 100-proof vodka. Run the machine for a few extra seconds once the reservoir is empty to ensure that no liquid remains.

7. Add Word Search Letters in Black

  • Re-mask the stencil covering all hearts and borders.
  • Expose only the letter areas.
  • Airbrush with Midnight Black for bold, readable text blocks.

8. Final Details (Add some flair)

  • Add red nonpareils to heart shapes or edges for extra texture.
  • Use royal icing to outline or add tiny piped details if desired.
  • Bag in cookie bags and make sure to include an edible marker so that the kiddos can find their fun, Valentine's day messages.

🧼 Clean Up & Care

  • Rinse airbrush with warm water, then run a flush of water through to clear color.
  • Rinse again with a small amount of clear alcohol (vodka) to remove residue.
  • Wash stencils and tools gently with warm soapy water.

💌 Tips for Success

  • Practice on parchment paper first (or use a reusable Notta Cookie Practice Cookie) — especially with the airbrush.
  • Work in light layers to prevent bleeding or spots.
  • Let each layer dry before adding another color.
  • Use magnets and Stencil Genie tools — they make placement so much easier.

🥰 Wrap-Up

These Valentine Word Search Cookies are not only delicious but interactive and personal — perfect for sharing love one cookie at a time. Whether you’re gifting them or selling them at a bake sale, they’re sure to stand out!

🎨 Optional: Royal Icing Instead of Airbrush

If you don’t have an airbrush setup, you can still use this design, with a slightly different result:

  • Flood your cookies with a petal pink color using flood consistency royal icing and let dry completely.
  • Place your stencil onto the cookie using a Stencil Holder or weights (or both)
  • With a thicker, stencil-consistency icing tinted in a black (or feel free to use any contrasting color) apply this to the stencil
  • Scrape off excess using a stencil scraper in one fluid motion. You want only a thin layer left behind to keep edges crisp!
  • Add details to portions of the wet icing, like red and pink edible glitter or luster dust.
  • Include an edible marker so kids can find the hidden words!

Each method gives a different effect — choose what fits your style!
