How to Make Salt Dough Ornaments

Salt Dough Ornament - The Perfect Recipe

It is a conundrum many parents will face when they have their children at home during the holidays: How do you entertain them? Make salt dough and create Christmas ornaments!

Here, we will walk you through what you need to make salt dough and how to bake it into the ornaments your children can make, decorate, and love.

Ingredients For Salt Dough

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup table salt
  • ¾ cup of warm water. An extra ¼ cup to one side
  • Parchment paper
  • Christmas Cookie Cutters
  • A straw
  • String or ribbon

Steps To Make The Salt Dough

You must ensure you’ve correctly mixed the salt dough to prevent crumbling, so here is how we do it!

  1. Preheat your oven to 300°F.
  2. Mix the flour and the salt until they are combined.
  3. Trickle the warm water into the mix while stirring it. If, after adding the water, the mixture is crumbly, add some more water.
  4. Pour the mixture onto a piece of parchment paper and knead it. The warmth of the hands brings the dough together and should create a smooth texture.
  5. Place another piece of parchment paper over the ball of salt dough. Use a rolling pin to roll the dough until it is flat and is between 1/8” and 1/4”.
  6. Use cookie cutters to cut the dough.
  7. Take your straw and poke holes roughly 1-1.5 cm down from the tops of the ornaments so you can thread the ribbon or string later.
  8. Bake the dough for about an hour and then allow it to cool for 2 before you move on to decorating.
  9. Decorate and hang on your tree!
