How to Become a Stencilling Pro

Creating professional-looking stenciling effects requires practice. Follow these instructions each time you practice for the best results!

  1. Start with your chosen stencil. Make sure it fits inside the cookie shape. You want it to be smaller than the edge of the flooded icing.
  2. Flood your cookie with royal icing that is flooding consistency, and let dry COMPLETELY! Stenciling on cookies that aren't cooled and dry will not turn out correctly!
  3. Make your stencil icing. You will need a medium to firm consistency. Tint with the Gel Colorant or leave white if desired.
  4. Place your flooded and dry cookies on the silicon mat to prevent cookies from slipping during stencil application.
  5. You will want to hold the stencil in place with magnets and/or a Stencil holder such as the Stencil Genie.

  1. Adjust the stencil to where you want he design to be on the cookie.
  2. Apply the icing to the stencil with the spatula and smooth it gently. Don’t be reserved with the icing, as more is definitely better!
  3. Once you have applied the icing, scrape off the excess off with the stencil scraper. Try to go in one direction with this! You want a THIN layer! The design should be almost level with the flooded icing.
