      Getting Started

The first step, of course, is to bake your sugar cookies (ingredients and recipe not included here). Here are the cookie cutters we used for this tutorial:

For the abstract tree background, try mixing some Black airbrush colorant with some Silver Shimmer. Load 4-5 drops into your AirGenie airbrush tool and use a white piece of paper to test out the combination and add more black or silver until you're happy with the result. Our plastic bottle with dropper tops work great for mixing colors!

Next, separate the two halves of the Stencil Genie and place the bottom (thicker) piece down with the magnets facing up. (Our Madrid 2 shaped cookies were made with an older, larger cookie cutter so I had to turn the Stencil Genie diagonally to get it to fit over the cookie.)

Position the stencil so that's centered in the square and lock it in place with the top half of the Genie. Now, take the ribbon masking piece and center it before placing the entire assembly over it and the cookie.

Always test out the airbrush spray prior to painting each cookie and color. Adjust as necessary by turning the knob on top of the unit. Apply the colorant in light coats while moving the tool in tight, circular motions. Once complete, remove all of the tools and place this cookie aside.

        Cleaning the Stencils and Tools

Rinse stencilsRinse masking pieces and toolsDry completely

To avoid getting colorant where you don't want it, it's important to clean your stencils and tools frequently. But fear not - cleaning is a snap! To do so, simply rinse off with water and dry completely using paper towels or a dish towel.

Repeat the above steps for the rest of the abstract tree design cookies.

Next, load a few drops of Bronze Shimmer into the airbrush tool reservoir.

Load the ribbon stencil into the Stencil Genie and airbrush the ribbon element. After airbrushing, try gently painting some gold luster dust onto the ribbon design. Lightly brush off excess luster dust using a loosely folded tissue.

Complete the ribbon airbrushing for the other cookies. Then, add a tiny drop of white icing to a gold sugar pearl and, using some tweezers, place it in the center of the ribbon "knot".

Do this for all the abstract tree cookies.

        Cleaning the Airbrush Tool

Rinse out reservoirFill reservoirRun liquid through

Before switching colors, you'll need to clean the airbrush tool. To do so, first rinse out the reservoir 3-4 times. Then, reattach the hose, refill the reservoir with water, then run the airbrush tool until empty. Repeat this step, once more with water, and a third time with an inexpensive 100-proof vodka. Continue to run air through the tool for a few seconds after it's empty.

Part 2: Candy Cane Gift Wrap Cookie Stencils

For the candy cane background, we will use the same technique as described earlier, except this time using Super Red. But, because we are not using the shimmer colors, we can add the Screen Genie on top of our stencil and then lock everything, including the ribbon masking piece, in place with the top portion of the Stencil Genie. (The shimmer does not work well with the mesh because it contains larger particles than its non-shimmer counterparts)

        Wipe meshBoth sidesWipe masking piece

Every two to three cookies, it will be necessary to remove excess colorant from the Screen Genie and other tools. To accomplish this, you can simply wipe them clean using paper towels.

For a less frequent and more thorough cleaning, rinse the tools under some running water and then dry completely before using again.

Now, let's switch to Emerald Green and stencil the ribbon elements. For this, take some Glad Press'n Seal and cover the stencil. Flatten out to remove and bubbles or wrinkles. Take the Gyro-Cut craft and hobby cutting tool and use it to trim around the gift tag elements. Peel away everything surrounding this cut area.

Stencil as above using the Screen Genie.

Finish up the green ribbons on the remaining candy cane cookies.

Next, remove the Press'n Seal and re-cover the stencil. Again, trim around the gift tag element but, this time, remove the trimmed area and leave the surrounding area covered.

Switch to Midnight Black and stencil the gift tag.

Complete the gift tag elements on all remaining candy cane design cookies. Next, pipe some white dots on the ribbon using some white icing. If necessary, thin out this icing using tiny amounts of water, until its consistency is such so that it makes nice rounded "buttons". Practice on a non-cookie surface until you get the desired result.
