When most people think of a cake, a cupcake, or even a cookie that is iced with red coloring, they instantly think of a bright red. Red, as a color, has many gradients, and you may need to make burgundy-colored icing when icing a cake or making a set of cookies (especially for roses). Burgundy is a deep and rich red, which has long been linked to royalty and can look stunning when it is the color of frosting.
Making burgundy-colored frosting or icing is tricky, but don't worry! We will walk you through the best ways to make burgundy icing.
What You Will Need
- Homemade (try our recipe for royal icing) or store-bought icing (try using Satin Ice Royal Icing Mix)
- Rose pink and Purple food coloring using DecoPac Premium Gel Colorants.
- Silicone spatula or wooden spoon
- Large bowl
How To Make Burgundy Icing
- Step 1 - Place the icing in the large bowl.
- Step 2 - Add the food coloring. To get the shade of burgundy that you want, you will need to add 5 parts rose pink and 1 part violet.
- Step 3 - Using a wooden spoon or a spatula, mix the coloring into the icing. Alternatively, mix the food coloring in a separate bowl and add it to the icing after.
- Step 4 - If you need to make more icing, repeat the recipe. If you want a deeper shade of burgundy, add more violet food coloring a drop at a time.
Please Note:
You may be wondering if burgundy icing is the same as maroon icing. In a word, no, it isn't. Maroon is redder, and burgundy has a purple hue.
Tip! When eating burgundy icing, try not to get it on clothes. Like most red icings and food colorings, it may stain clothes, lips, and even teeth. So, if it's on a cake, ensure no one is eating with their bare hands!
